Indeed, the typical progression of children’s theory of mind abilities across childhood is closely aligned with the development of narrative processing skills. This paper posits that children’s understanding of others’ minds may be a potential missing piece in current accounts of reading comprehension. Without understanding theory of mind and being able to take others’ perspectives, it could be difficult for children to read and understand narrative texts. Theory of mind is the understanding that other people have mental states that drive their actions and that those mental states can be different from one’s own. By prompting dialogue, valuing children’s voices, and affirming children's role as change agents, educators make social justice learning visible. The insights gained here are important because exploring social justice through picturebooks has the potential to be an essential practice in early childhood education which will enable teachers to guide their students’ development in this key area. Based on her experiences as teacher and researcher, the author describes the approach and offers guiding principles for early childhood educators. Through read-alouds, the author promoted social justice and created a classroom community that embraced identity, diversity, justice, and action.

This was not a prepackaged plan or a strict script instead, the author drew from the research literature and her own experience as an early childhood educator to use books as an entry point to rich discussions and thinking. Picturebooks for Social Justice was born of 2-year design-based qualitative research study exploring the intentional use of interactive read-alouds in early childhood education. This article highlights the Picturebooks for Social Justice approach which the author developed within her preschool program.

These results extend the knowledge on the relation between ToM and academic achievement in older children and show the existence of a specific relationship between ToM and RC in middle childhood.įull-text available for some weeks without registration to the journal here: Individual differences in ToM were unrelated to variation in mathematical ability, but showed a bidirectional developmental association with variation in RC. In Study 2, a new sample of 60 children (mean age = 9 8 years at T1) was followed over a 6-month period, with children completing tests of ToM, RC and mathematical ability at both timepoints. Results showed that the relationship between ToM and RC remained significant when more general effects of VA, WM and family affluence were taken into account. In Study 1, measures of ToM and RC were gathered alongside measures of verbal ability (VA), working memory (WM) and family affluence in 157 children (mean age = 9 7 years).
